Storage providers advertising no egress fees (Wasabi came up) still have limits: go over a certain amount of egress per month and you get a phone call telling you they don't want you anymore. The Index instead runs Cloudflare in front of Linode.
no egress fees. But then, as soon as you get over a certain amount of gigabits of egress per month, you get a phone call. And they the phone call is we don't like you anymore.
His USB-C cable kept resting on the RodeCaster's XLR jack and adding hiss. Dave stuck copper foil tape (the kind he uses to shield guitar electronics cavities) between them, and the noise went away.
wanting to always go back and rest on top of the XLR jack. So I just put some copper foil there. I feel like we're in good shape. I know I don't hear any hizzy
After a listener suggested it, Dave dropped the Windows box he'd built for his Stream Deck and switched to Bitfocus Companion on Linux, which he calls awesome.
So I said, Oh, screw it. I'll try this. As what I'm using right now. I'm using bit focus on you. Right, it's awesome.
Dave told the Accidental Tech Podcast hosts to take the cap off their monthly membership so fans can give as much as they want, and they did. He thinks TWiT should do the same.
I told the guys at ATP. Take Take the lid off. And and take the cap off your monthly membership. And they did. Oh, and now you can give them as much as you want.
After a publisher misspelled Dave's wife's website in a children's book, they ended up paying every year for domain names pointed at her real site, purely for defense.
that I'm pointing to for like the net for the rest of my life that I'm paying for every year. Only for defense.
ToolsYouTube as a free host (via alternate enclosure)
Instead of feeding YouTube, podcasters could reference their YouTube videos as alternate enclosures in their own RSS feed, the way people once used SoundCloud and archive.org. Dave thinks it's worth testing.
I think it's worth I think it's worth looking at it because it'd be flip it around. us use the use the free host. Hey, why not?
People who represent podcast advertising agencies often sound like they're in a can. Microphones aren't expensive; anyone in that job should get a decent mic and audio interface on day one.
You sound horrible. Like, I don't understand how they let that out. Microphones are not expensive. You should be handed a decent microphone and audio interface is the day that you sign up for this job.
After asking for an early-warning system for the Podcast Index API, Dave got one: Podverse's sysadmin added Index API checks to his Uptime Kuma monitoring with email alerts.
Oh, that's cool. Oh, he had an he had some monitoring setup. Using uptime Kuma that?
Dave likes feed-mirror services because they add a layer of indirection: you can change hosts a hundred times without updating any directories. The risk is the mirror service shutting down, so pick a company that's been around a long time.
Because then it sort of gets an indirection like you can change hosts 100 times and you never have to actually update any directories right
Dave made a sheet-metal cone hung on a tree to dispatch the roosters his family raises. He says it's quick and humane. He also scalds the birds in hot water so the feathers release.
So I made the cone. I made a cone at a sheet metal hanging on the tree. You flip them upside down and drop their head down through the bottom of the cone. And then you take a super sharp knife you pull the neck in.
Dave's personal strategy when sick: give it a week, and if he isn't getting better by day seven, go see his ENT (it usually turns out to be a bacterial sinus infection).
So I go to the I go to the end. User, here's my typical. Here's my typical strategy. So I'll give it a week. And then if I'm not getting better by day seven,
When estimating plays (e.g. for music licensing reporting), Dave suggests OP3, because the podcast industrial complex's download calculations will overcount.
using op three. Because if you if you go with any of the podcasts industrial complex downloaddownload calculations, you're gonna be you're gonna be way over a
Going the extra step to make a web app an installable progressive web app (like LN Beats) makes a huge difference: it feels like a native app.
It's like it's when you when you go that extra step and make it sort of into an installable item. Like music side project. And that can or LM Bates. I'm sorry. It's like it makes a huge difference if it just feels good.
Dave tells app developers who only need update notifications to skip the API and watch Podping. A $5 Linode can run a push-notification server for an app.
if that's all your need, then the API for you don't need the API, just use piping. And everybody sees the feed.
The Podcast Index API timed out because Dave had turned off log rotation on the front-end servers while troubleshooting and never turned it back on; logs filled the disks. He'd long meant to add a disk-space checker. Lesson: restore temporary changes and monitor disk space.
I had turned off the log rotation in order because I was troubleshooting a problem. And I just didn't turn it back on. Now, this thing's growing. You know, exponentially daily.
Object storage is cheap; block storage attached to cloud virtual machines is expensive. Anyone hosting media (e.g. IPFS nodes) has to plan for the monthly cost.
Object storage is cheap block storage, which is what this is, is not Yeah, exactly. On a VM, you know, block storage on a cloud cloud providers just in their virtual machines. Those are expensive.
Searching Podcast Index for free readings of a story, Dave found many versions. The narrator is 99% of the experience, especially with open-source recordings.
just like any audio book thing, the narrator is done is 99% of the experience.
OtherAmerica This Week (podcast, Matt Taibbi & Walter Kirn)
One of Dave's favorite shows. Each week the hosts discuss a short story, and Dave first finds an audio reading of it (e.g. on LibriVox via Podcast Index) before listening to their discussion.
I subscribe to this podcast America this week with Matt Taibbi and Walter Kern and it's one of my favorite shows. He every week they discuss a short story.
With car insurance up 42% and homeowners up at least 20%, Dave called his agent to pare the policies back, raising the deductibles.
Our car our car insurance went up 42%. And so and I had to actually call and in start and pare it back. I had to get at a call mom say okay, let's let's raise the deductible.
Dave's standard advice: if you're on WordPress, use PowerPress. If you focus on value-for-value and don't want to self-host, Blubrry or RSS.com have it built in. Otherwise Buzzsprout.
and they don't want to self host I usually go blueberry or rss.com because they have that stuff built in. If it's something that you know, if it's something else up kick them over to Buzzsprout
Not in the audio. 'PowerPress' for WordPress was said by Adam immediately before; Dave continues 'or really simple' (likely Really Simple Syndication / RSS.com garbled). 'blueberry' = Blubrry.
Life tipsKeep proprietary data out of public AI tools
His firm had to tell staff not to use AI chat tools with internal information. Submitting proprietary data to them amounts to a manual data breach.
Hey, you can't submit our internal stuff. But I think just like be exact. Yeah, exactly. I mean, you're basically that's like, that's like a it's like a manual data breach.
Dave's public service announcement: at his day job, a wave of hard-to-pin-down Windows problems (memory leaks, weird printer behavior) was almost always fixed by disabling Fast Startup in the power options ('Choose what the power buttons do').
The public service announcement is if you run Windows, disable, you will be doing yourself a favor to disable fast startup. Oh, in the power options.
SoftwarePodcast Index clone of the iTunes lookup API
Apple's lookup API was throwing frequent 503s. Podcast Index runs a clone endpoint: swap the iTunes hostname for api.podcastindex.org and it works, so apps can fall back to it and flip back when Apple recovers.
If your app depends on the Apple API, Apple lookup API, you can just replace the host name of forgot what it's like. I look up that iTunes dot commerce out forgot what just replace the host name with API podcast. index.org. And it just works.
Not in the audio. Dave's own service (self-promotion). The Apple hostname (itunes.apple.com) is garbled in the transcript; he couldn't remember it on air.
Food & healthSmoking meat at home (ribs, Boston butts; Meat Church seasoning)
Dave has a smoker (a friend's hand-me-down) and smokes baby back ribs and Boston butts. He name-checked Meat Church, the BBQ seasoning brand.
I got a buddy of mine gave me a smoker gave me his old smoker a couple nine a couple of weeks. Now you're talking and South preps and some baby back ribs before the show with Do you know meet church
Life tipsSeparate browsers/email clients per context
Dave runs Edge, Chrome, Brave and Firefox side by side, plus separate email clients, so each context stays organized and he doesn't have to think about it.
I use like four different browsers I'll use edge chrome brave and in Firefox, just to keep things like on the same computer at the same time just to keep things in different like organized differently well, it helps me to have to it helps me not to have to think about it so I can be rapid response
The Podcast Index person search filters out common English words and names, so it is ideal for unusual names and terms. Searching 'newsguard' turned up every podcast interview with its founder. Dave uses it all the time.
I'm telling you, I use a started using this person search all the time, it is so killer, because you you can find studies, not just person, like basically, it just excludes almost every English word from as a stop word list.
Not in the audio. He built this tool himself (Podcast Index), so it is self-promotion. At the time it was available via the API, not exposed on the website.
Dave gets up from his desk, walks around for 10-15 minutes and listens to a podcast. He says some of his best thinking happens on these walks.
get up from my desk take a walk around around the the office area for a while just to get stretch my legs get some exercise. And usually I listened to a podcast while I'm walking you just about 1015 minutes.
Dave thinks people using Raspberry Pis as their main desktop are nuts. Adam's alternative in the same exchange: for similar money, a small Beelink mini PC running Ubuntu is more powerful.
People using these Raspberry Pi's as like their main desktop, you people are nuts, just don't do this.
His prepaid William Shatner photo was a scam: you pay in advance for packages and stand behind plexiglass several feet away. If you get the option, say no.
If you ever go to a Comic Con, and you and you have the option to get your picture made with the Star Trek guys for Shatner individually. Say no.
For a cheap laptop to give someone, it doesn't have to be new: a five-year-old Lenovo like the T15 is still great and can be found on eBay for around $75.
like like a like a Lenovo like a five year old Lenovo T 15 which is still a great machine. You can find those on eBay for like painty 75 bucks
Not in the audio. 'painty 75 bucks' is a garbled price (likely 'seventy-five' or 'sixty, seventy-five'). He says 'T 15'; the exact model is as transcribed.
Life tipsCustodial Lightning wallet for small balances
Nothing is wrong with a custodial wallet holding $100 or less for boosting, as long as you sweep it out to a non-custodial wallet. You don't keep your life savings in it.
there's nothing wrong with having a custodial wallet that just holds 100 bucks or less.
ToolsThunderHub CSV exports for lightning node taxes
Dave exports the year's six CSV reports from ThunderHub (on-chain fees/receives/sends; lightning forwards/payments/invoices), drops channel-open on-chain sends, sums income and expenses in a spreadsheet (fiat values included), and sends it to the accountant.
what I do is I go into, I go into thunder hub, and just export everything for the year there's there's basically six files you get in there split up into on chain, and lightning.
Life tipsCheck your exposure above the $250k FDIC limit
After SVB, Dave said anyone with more than $250,000 at a smaller regional bank must seriously ask whether that money is safe. It's a business and estate question, not a theoretical one.
If you've got more than 250,000, if you're a quote, large depositor at a smaller regional bank, yeah. Then you this is a question you must ask yourself, this is a big, this is a business question,
